As an LGBTQ person, it may seem that heterosexual, cisgender people all around you are getting pregnant. Watching parents push strollers down the street can make it feel like humans are adept at procreation, but in reality– we are one of the least efficient species at making babies! A heterosexual, cisgender couple may try for months to achieve a pregnancy, and for some of that, “trying” means having intercourse multiple times during the week of ovulation. But for LGBTQ people, often “trying” means attempting conception only once or twice a month.
Main Line Fertility providers will use the most accurate tools to help time these conception attempts, so you’re getting the best shot possible at a pregnancy. But just as heterosexual couples may find that pregnancy takes some time, you may find that months go by without that plus sign appearing on your pregnancy test.
We’ve supported hundreds of hopeful individuals and couples on their routes to parenthood, so we know how frustrating, disappointing, and disheartening a negative pregnancy test can be. We’ll work to be fully honest with you about your pregnancy chances at every step of our partnership, so you’ll always know what to expect. But we also know that some of this process is up to chance! You could do everything right, and we could do everything right, and a conception might just not happen for a few months.
Your provider will work hand-in-hand with you to decide how many times you feel you want to try each conception tactic. You and your partner (if you have one) may choose to set a number of IUI’s you’d like to try before changing tactics, either by leveling up to IVF or switching partners (if your partner is able and willing to try conception). Depending on your timeline and age, you may want to start with a more successful tactic, such as IVF, right off the bat so you can maximize your chances of achieving a pregnancy. Whatever you choose, our providers will be with you to give valuable insights and guidance along the way.
