Fertility testing serves as a critical starting point guiding the path to informed family planning. At Main Line Fertility, our mission is to equip you with the knowledge necessary to make educated decisions about fertility testing.

Moving beyond a singular focus on female fertility, we also recognize the crucial importance of addressing male fertility, providing a holistic perspective on the process. Our commitment surpasses conventional approaches; we take pride in offering more than standard tests. Our range of fertility testing services is designed to support aspiring parents on their way to conception.

What is a Fertility Evaluation?

Whether you’re ready to have a baby or just want to learn more about your options for fertility preservation, a fertility evaluation is the first step.

At your visit, you will be greeted by a fertility care coordinator who will review the new patient visit checklist and your insurance with you. You will then meet with a member of our clinical care team who will review your medical history. Depending on the purpose of your visit, they may also perform an ultrasound and lab work. Our clinical care team will also discuss the benefits of genetic carrier screening.

During the consultation with your fertility specialist, you will discuss your medical history and family planning goals, and review the results of available tests. Your doctor will work with you and your partner (if applicable) to create a personalized treatment plan.

When to Schedule a Fertility Evaluation

You should get a fertility evaluation as soon as you are considering using assistive reproductive technology (ART). A fertility evaluation can save time and money in the long run as it can discover any fertility challenges that would make some methods of ART less productive than others. Another good rule of thumb is to schedule your fertility evaluation after one year of trying to conceive without success if you’re under the age of 35 or after six months if you’re 35 or older.

Who Should Get a Fertility Evaluation?

All aspiring parents can benefit from the insights provided by a fertility evaluation, no matter their health, reproductive status, relationship status, sexuality, or gender identity. Whether you’re pursuing parenthood now or planning for the future, understanding your fertility health is a valuable step toward building your family.

If you are 35 or older, a fertility work-up can evaluate your current reproductive capabilities, as age can impact egg and sperm quality. For couples, whether heterosexual, same-sex, or nonbinary partnerships, fertility evaluations can provide clarity on which partner might be more suitable to contribute genetically to pregnancy or if additional support, such as egg donation or sperm donation, might be needed.

For transgender, gender-diverse, and intersex individuals, particularly those who have undergone gender-affirming hormone therapy or surgeries, a fertility evaluation can assess the status of hormone levels and reproductive cells. This information can help guide decisions about fertility preservation or reproductive options.

For those considering third-party reproduction (e.g., surrogacy, egg or sperm donation), understanding your own fertility status – or that of your partner – can help you plan for the most effective and fulfilling path to parenthood.

A fertility evaluation isn’t just about identifying challenges—it’s about creating opportunities, building awareness, and empowering you to make informed choices that align with your family-building dreams.

Testing Procedures for Female Fertility

At Main Line Fertility, we recognize that the foundational steps toward family planning involve gaining a nuanced account of female fertility, which is why in-depth knowledge of the complexities of female fertility is a cornerstone of our approach. From assessing hormonal balance to examining the structural integrity of reproductive organs, our comprehensive suite of fertility tests aims to provide a thorough and accurate picture. We prioritize empowering women with knowledge, enabling them to make educated decisions about their reproductive journey.

AMH Testing

Hormones orchestrate the delicate balance of the female reproductive system; among them, AMH plays a pivotal role. Understanding AMH is crucial in making informed decisions about fertility treatments. It serves as a valuable indicator for both healthcare providers and individuals planning to conceive, offering a glimpse into the reproductive timeline and guiding the development of personalized fertility strategies.

Transvaginal Ultrasound

A transvaginal ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique providing a clear view of the ovaries and uterus. Transvaginal ultrasound is a pivotal component of female fertility testing, offering a visual assessment of the reproductive organs. This procedure involves a probe inserted into the vagina, emitting sound waves to create detailed images. By examining the ovaries and uterus, fertility specialists gain crucial insights into the health and functionality of these vital reproductive structures.

Hysterosalpingogram (HSG)

Gaining more insight into a woman's fertility can sometimes involve employing a hysterosalpingogram (HSG) as a specialized diagnostic tool and procedure. A hysterosalpingogram is a specialized X-ray procedure that involves injecting contrast dye into the uterus and fallopian tubes. This allows healthcare providers to identify any blockages or abnormalities that may impede the fertilization process. By pinpointing potential obstacles, HSG helps in tailoring fertility treatment plans to address specific concerns, optimizing the chances of a successful pregnancy.

Testing Procedures for Male Fertility

A complete picture of fertility is multifaceted, with fertility testing involving both female and male potential parents. The primary way that male fertility is assessed is through semen analysis.

Semen Analysis

Male fertility hinges on various factors, with semen analysis serving as a key diagnostic tool. This laboratory test examines various aspects of semen, providing valuable information about sperm health and function. Here's a breakdown of what semen analysis typically looks for:

  • Sperm Count: The total number of sperm present in a given sample.
  • Sperm Motility: The percentage of sperm that exhibit forward movement, a vital factor in their ability to reach and fertilize an egg.
  • Sperm Morphology: The shape and structure of sperm, as abnormalities can impact their ability to penetrate an egg.

Testicular Ultrasound

In addition to semen analysis, testicular ultrasound is a valuable diagnostic tool for assessing male reproductive health. This non-invasive imaging technique provides detailed insights into the structure of the testicles, identifying potential issues such as varicoceles (enlarged veins in the scrotum) or structural abnormalities. By offering a visual examination of the testicles, this test can be particularly useful in uncovering conditions that may affect sperm production and overall reproductive function, providing essential information for tailored interventions or treatments.

Clarity of these parameters and reproductive systems helps healthcare providers assess male fertility and tailor interventions or treatments accordingly.
